ALL STARS Drug Prevention Education

Middle school class designed to help students develop positive ideals, create a belief in conventional norms, build strong personal commitments, increase positive parental attentiveness, and create bond with school, pro-social institutions, and family. The character-based curriculum is utilized to prevent high-risk behaviors in teens. Two days per week during day and evening hours, students learn the importance of establishing goals and the process of preparation needed to meet them. Each student walks away with a better understanding of success, self, family, and society! This is a model program identified by the National Center for Substance Abuse Prevention.

Hand-N-Hand Mentoring Program

Students receive weekly contact with a caring adult to establish academic and career goals. The mentoring project targets students identified in the 6th through 12th grades who require additional support. Students receive weekly contact with a mentor who serves as a leader, guide, and role model. The student also attends regularly scheduled meetings with the school counselors and participates in community service and other enrichment activities. CIS trains all mentors in order execute successful mentor-student relationships.

Literacy Plus Program-America Reads

Elementary level program committed to the goal that every student in grades k-5 will read well and independently by receiving one-on-one reading assistance from a caring and qualified adult. This tutorial assistance program utilizes concepts from the National America Reads Challenge. Literacy Plus Coordinators recruit and train community volunteers, providing tutors to students who require reading assistance. Our goal is to serve a minimum of one hundred children per participating elementary school site.

Summer Enrichment

Communities In Schools sponsors a summer-long enrichment program for middle and high school-aged youth. Each student participates in stimulating leadership development exercises. This five week program exposes students to an array of critical topics, such as drug and alcohol prevention, teen pregnancy prevention, and career/vocational education, as well as summer fun activities, as camping and job shadowing. All activities are designed to create student interest in academic and social achievement.

Social Services Case Management

The Case Manager acquires resources for students needing assistance in areas of health and human services, as well as academic support. This opportunity represents an enhancement of services developed from the successful collaboration between Troup County Schools, Department of Family and Children Services, United Way of West Georgia, and Communities In Schools.
